I just recently had the opportunity to photograph images for local Austin small business, Red Fan Communications. They have quite the set up in this AMAZING old home, just north of the UT Campus.

We needed headshots of the team (including the resident pup – so adorable).

And isn’t that conference room gorgeous?! Especially the turquoise chandelier. I need one.

I spent a few weeks this winter with my new friend Wendy Laurel, on Maui’s west side, soaking up the sun and enjoying some time away. I love it there, everything about it. Well, maybe not all the bugs, or the lack of housing, but most everything else is perfect. It’s calling my name… I’ll be back… hopefully soon.

San Diego Baby

Heather and I were friends here in Austin back when we both used to work as nannies. She’s since moved on to beachy San Diego, where she lives in an enviable North Park Bungalow. We used to joke about how new parents are so skittish with their babies, always fretting about every little thing. She now agrees with them, and confirmed to me that when you have your own, it’s totally different. This, I will have to find out on my own, eventually. But for now, I’ll settle for taking the pictures, which has all the fun and none of the sleepless nights. Congrats to h+D on your new baby boy!

East Texas

Nearly ever summer, until I was about 14, was spent in east Texas with my grandma, who I’ve always called “Mawmaw.” Some of my best childhood memories are from those summers, playing in the sprinklers, making mud pies, and making real cherry pies on hot afternoons. After my grandpa died she moved to a new house, with more property, and now has cows. I couldn’t help but take some pictures of them last time I went to visit.

FIND Maui

Back in November, I attended the FIND Workshop, by Jonathan Canlas. This is only the second photography workshop I’ve been to, and it was AMAZING. Everyone seems to say the same things about Jon – he’s funny, he’s an open book, he’s really helpful, he attracts really cool people – and all those things are absolutely true. This isn’t one of those wine and cheese meet-and-greet followed by inspiring speakers lecturing a room full of photographers kind of workshop (and yes, I went to one of those too). This was more of a chilled out, bar-b-q on the beach, funny joking around, laughing kind of workshop, where you felt like part of a new family at the end.

While I learned photography with film cameras and darkroom developing, I hardly remembered anything (digital has a way of taking over). After realizing a lot of my favorite work by fellow photographers was shot on film, I decided to relearn everything from film stocks to hand held meters. I ordered a Mamiya 645 Pro and a Sekonic L-508 Meter, happy to take the plunge. Jon and his assistant Joe were extremely helpful in teaching me the ins and outs of my new gear. I left the workshop fully confident that I can shoot film successfully (yippy!). If you’d like to read more, I wrote about the workshop here, too.

Oh, and did I mention that the workshop was in MAUI?! So now I have super fun, colorful beach photography too. All of these images were taken with my Mamiya 645 Pro and the 2.8 lens, with a variety of film (portra 160, 400, and 800, ektar, fuji 400h, and reala).

This is the house were the workshop was held – can’t get better than that.

This is the amazing, fun, happy, awesome Wendy Laurel and her family. Many thanks to them for hosting the workshop and letting us girls crash at her place.

I’m much more of a fan of color, vs. black and white, but I was down to my last few rolls of film and thought I try the Kodak Tri-X on this couple. Fun facts: they own a tattoo shop on Maui, and are originally from Dallas.

Key West, Florida

I have an obsession with color- I like color, everywhere, and I like color to be bold, bright, and vibrant. South Florida and The Keys fit this description perfectly, like a box of Crayons threw up there, just for me.

Back in August I traveled here with my hubby, Ben. We snorkeled, rode bikes, swam, picked local fruit on a unique adventure with Lloyd, and basically just had a great time unwinding. We found the most amazing vegan/vegetarian friendly restaurant, and ate there basically every day. One of the highlights of the trip was a vegan key lime cheesecake pie they special made for us – freaking delicious, I still daydream about it.

We also loved the moon and sunset cruises aboard the Jolly Rover. Both the owner and crew were super nice, and if you’re ever in Key West, I suggest you book a cruise and meet them.

Another great thing about vacationing in Key West was the flight from Austin was quick, cheap, and one-way (on Southwest). If you go in the summer, you beat the crowds and get cheaper rates. It’d be great with kids too, lots of things to do for the family. Plus lots of nightlife for those who like to stay up.

South Congress

I visited New Orleans, LA a while back, and while I was there I met someone who said they didn’t like Austin very much. Specifically, they didn’t like South Congress. They thought people “tried too hard.” Like the shops were just trying to be cool, the people trying to dress extra hip, the coffee trying too hard to be the awesomest. You get the picture. I politely disagreed with him, and stood my ground that Austin is by far the best city ever (yes, ever). Gotta love the holiday decor.

Breaking Bad

Just a random post here, talking about TV. Yup. So, I started watching Breaking Bad a few weeks ago, became obsessed, and have finished through the 3rd season. It’s so good, like a more serious, more dramatic “Weeds” (that’s also a great show). Super gritty, sometimes hard to watch, but also really compelling and hard not to watch. I love how each episode is a straight up continuation of the last. They also shoot a lot of interesting angles and I like the warm, contrasty look. Bonus points that seasons 1-3 are “watch instant” on Netflix. I’d love to hear recommendations for your favorite, must-watch TV show!
